Background on the Military Order of the Devil Dogs
The Military Order of the Devil Dogs is the “fun and honor society” of the Marine Corps League.
It is comprised of regular members of the League who have been recommended for membership by two members
of the MODD. Each Devil Dog member goes through a series of initiations as they advance through the ranks
of the Devil Dogs, first as a Pup, then and a Devil Dog and finally advance to Pedigree Devil Dog. Advancement
is not automatic after 1 year, it must be earned, it is a privilege, not a right.
Military Order of Devil Dogs Qualification for Membership
The candidate to join must be a member of the Marine Corps League for a minimum of one year,
must be current in their dues and in good standing in the League. The applicant must be active
in their detachment and must be invited to join the Devil Dogs. The candidate must be recommended
be the Detachment Commandant and be sponsored by two Devil Dogs or Pedigree Devil Dogs. The
applicant is then interviewed by members of the Pound at a Pound Growl (aka as a local meeting
of the Pound). If accepted, the applicant must then undergo as initiation and obligation ceremony.
After the ceremony the candidate is sworn in as a ‘Pup’ in the Military Order of Devil Dogs.
The Pup must then keep working to earn advancement to ‘Devil Dog’ after a minimum of one year’s
membership in the Pound. Advancement to the degree of Devil Dog usually occurs at the annual
State convention of the Department. The Devil Dog must again earn advancement to the degree of
‘Pedigree Devil Dog’. Advancement to Pedigree Devil Dog occurs at the Supreme Growl that is held
in conjunction with the MCL National Convention each year.
